Chrome Plating Questions

What is chrome plating and how does it work?

Chrome plating is an electrochemical process that deposits a thin layer of chromium onto metal surfaces. The process involves cleaning and preparing the part, applying base layers (usually copper and nickel), then electroplating chrome using chromic acid solutions and electrical current. This creates a durable, corrosion-resistant finish with a distinctive mirror-like appearance. We offer both decorative chrome (thin, shiny finish) and hard chrome (thicker, more durable) depending on your application needs.

How long does chrome plating last?

The lifespan of chrome plating depends on the application and environment. For decorative chrome on automotive parts in normal conditions, expect 10-20+ years of service. Hard chrome used in industrial applications can last 5-15 years depending on wear conditions. Proper maintenance including regular cleaning and avoiding harsh chemicals will extend the life significantly. Environmental factors like salt exposure, chemicals, and mechanical wear affect longevity. Quality preparation and proper base layers, which we provide, are crucial for maximum durability.

Can damaged chrome be repaired or does it need to be re-plated?

Minor chrome damage like small scratches can sometimes be polished out, but most chrome damage requires complete stripping and re-plating. Chrome cannot be touched up or partially repaired due to its electrochemical nature. Pitting, corrosion, or significant scratches mean the chrome layer has been compromised and must be completely removed. We then repair any base metal damage, apply fresh base layers, and re-chrome the entire part. This process actually results in better durability than the original plating since we address any underlying issues.

What's the difference between decorative chrome and hard chrome?

Decorative chrome is thin (0.0002"-0.0005") and provides brilliant mirror finish primarily for appearance. It's used on bumpers, trim, and show parts. Hard chrome is much thicker (0.002"-0.020") and designed for wear resistance and functionality. It's used on hydraulic cylinders, machine tools, and industrial components. Hard chrome has a more matte appearance but provides superior durability and corrosion resistance. Hard chrome can be ground and polished after plating if needed. Both require nickel base layers, but decorative chrome typically uses copper as well for enhanced appearance.

Service & Process Questions

How long does the plating process take?

Standard chrome plating typically takes 3-7 business days depending on project complexity and current workload. Simple polishing jobs may be completed in 1-2 days. Complex restoration projects requiring repair work can take 1-3 weeks. Rush service is available for urgent needs with surcharges. Factors affecting timeline include: condition of parts (damaged parts require more prep time), size of project, current shop capacity, and finish requirements. We provide realistic timeframes during consultation and keep you updated on progress.

What parts can and cannot be chrome plated?

Most metal parts can be chrome plated including steel, iron, brass, copper, and some aluminum alloys. We can plate automotive bumpers, trim, wheels, motorcycle parts, industrial components, and hardware. Parts must fit in our plating tanks (maximum 48" x 24" x 12"). We cannot plate certain high-carbon steels prone to hydrogen embrittlement, some aluminum alloys, magnesium, or pot metal (zinc alloy) parts. Plastic parts require special conductive preparation. Threaded parts may need masking. We evaluate each part individually and recommend alternatives if chrome plating isn't suitable.

Do you offer pickup and delivery services?

Yes, we offer pickup and delivery services for customers in the Yuma area and surrounding regions. This is especially helpful for large or heavy parts, or when you have multiple items. Delivery charges vary based on distance and item size/weight. We can coordinate with shipping companies for out-of-state customers. For valuable or delicate items, we recommend our pickup service to ensure proper handling. Local delivery is typically scheduled within 1-2 business days of completion. Contact us to discuss pickup/delivery options and pricing for your specific location and items.

How should I prepare parts before bringing them in?

Minimal preparation is needed - we handle most cleaning and prep work. Remove any rubber gaskets, seals, or non-metal components that shouldn't be plated. Clean off heavy grease or dirt, but don't use harsh chemicals or abrasives that might damage the base metal. For automotive parts, remove any mounting hardware you want to keep separate. Take photos of complex assemblies before disassembly. Don't attempt to polish or sand parts yourself as this can create problems. Bring parts in their current condition and we'll assess what preparation is needed for optimal results.

Pricing & Business Questions

How do you determine pricing for chrome plating?

Pricing is based on several factors: part size and surface area, condition and required preparation work, type of plating (decorative vs. hard chrome), complexity of masking or fixturing, and current material costs. We provide detailed written estimates after examining your parts. Simple small parts start around $150, while large complex items can range to $500+. Restoration work requiring repair adds to base plating costs. Rush jobs include surcharges. We're transparent about all costs upfront with no hidden fees. Volume discounts available for multiple similar parts.

Do you offer any warranties on your work?

Yes, we stand behind our workmanship with a comprehensive warranty. We warranty against defects in plating adhesion, coverage, and finish quality for 12 months from completion. This covers peeling, flaking, or premature failure under normal use conditions. The warranty does not cover damage from accidents, abuse, chemical exposure, or normal wear in harsh environments. We'll re-plate warranted items at no charge. Our 20+ years in business and reputation depend on quality work, so we make things right if issues arise. Proper maintenance and care instructions are provided to help maximize plating life.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept cash, checks, and all major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover). For large commercial accounts, we offer net-30 payment terms with approved credit. Payment is typically due upon completion, though we may require deposits for expensive projects or new customers. We provide detailed invoices showing all work performed. For insurance claims, we can work directly with your insurance company and provide necessary documentation. Contact us to discuss payment arrangements for large or complex projects.

Can you work with insurance companies for restoration projects?

Yes, we frequently work with insurance companies on collision repair and restoration claims. We provide detailed estimates, documentation, and photos required by insurance adjusters. Our estimates break down all necessary work including stripping, repair, base layers, and final plating. We can work directly with your insurance company or through your chosen body shop. We understand insurance requirements and timelines. For classic car restorations, we help document original specifications and appropriate restoration methods.
